Acupuncture and Tuina

Acupuncture is part of the traditional medicine of China and has been in practice for around 3000 years. Treatment is based on the principle that our health is dependent on our body’s motivating energy, known as Qi. This energy keeps us functioning physically, emotionally and spiritually. Qi flows throughout the body in channels known as meridians. People can become ill when they either have too little qi, a blockage in the qi flow or an imbalance.

Many factors can interfere with and affect our qi including: our emotional state; poor nutrition; the weather; hereditary factors; infections; poisons and trauma. Diagnosis is based on establishing the overall quantity and quality of Qi in an individual and seeing if there are any blocks or imbalances

Treatment is then focused on either strengthening or harmonizing the free flow of qi, leaving the patient with a sense of well-being and calm.  Scientific studies have shown that acupuncture stimulates the secretion of chemicals in the body such as endorphins, neurotransmitters, hormones and lymphokines. The patient therefore is enabled to tap into his/her own internal pharmacy to promote healing.

    TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE TREATMENTS

ACUPUNCTURE

A method of inserting very fine sterile stainless steel needles into acupuncture points just beneath the body’s surface to both re-balance and remove obstructions of Qi. All needles used in this practice are sterile and disposable to ensure the patient’s health and safety. In adults the needles remain in for twenty minutes but with children each needle only stays in for a few of seconds and so treatment is over within a few minutes. A warm tingly feeling is the most typical sensation during treatment.

Moxa

Moxa is a warming herb  often used in treatment. It looks like a cigar and one end is lit and held over an Acupuncture point.  It has both a warming and strengthening effect and feels very pleasant.

QI GONG

Consists of gentle exercises and various meditations designed to massage internal organs, balance and strengthen the body’s energies, relax the mind and improve blood circulation. Qi Gong techniques encourage the body’s natural well-being and healing ability.
